Betting on digital transformation, accompanied by the computerization and digitalization of processes and services for the people, constitutes a priority for the Cuban Ministry of Communications (Mincom) in 2024.

At its annual work meeting, held today in Havana with the presence of Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) and President of the Republic, and Manuel Marrero Cruz, member of the Political Bureau and Prime Minister, the potential to advance in areas such as the deployment of digital terrestrial television and infrastructure improvements to strengthen the fixed and mobile telephone signal were analyzed.

Mayra Arevich Marín, Minister of Communications, stated that the number of users of mobile networks has increased in the country and that the number of clients who use third and fourth generation technologies, known as 3G and 4G, respectively, has increased. These results are influenced by the installation of the Arimao submarine fiber optic cable in 2023, he added. Regarding digital terrestrial television,

Arevich Marín pointed out that with the support of a donation from China at the beginning of this year, progress is being made in the so-called analog blackout, with figures that show a consumption of more than 70 percent of the standard signal and 50 percent percent signal in high definition.

The owner insisted on the importance of Government portals, which currently number 263 among the Central State Administration Agencies, local governments and entities, but only 35 percent of the population interacts with them.

Among the positive elements, the increase in the use of digital signatures stood out, especially among taxpayers of the National Tax Administration Office. Regarding the use of digital stamps, the Minister pointed out that at least three million procedures in the nation were carried out using this modality in 2023.

Arevich Marín clarified that in that period one million stamps were printed, which have been reserved for moments of contingency. Regarding the electronic payment platform Transfermóvil, he explained that it already has more than four million users and that a tool like the Mobile Wallet has been widely received by people. Among the difficulties that still persist in the sector are the delay in telephone transfers, the poor mobile phone signal in some territories and the slowness in the delivery of international parcels, the minister stressed.
