The First Vice Minister of the Ministry of Communications of the Republic of Cuba, Wilfredo Gonzáles Vidal, spoke this Tuesday at the Communication and Information Commission of the 42nd General Conference of UNESCO.
During the consideration of the Director-General's report on the implementation of the results of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS), the Deputy Minister highlighted that a few days after the 20th anniversary of the first phase of the World Summit on the Information Society Information Society, in which important documents were adopted at the level of Heads of State and Government, the digital divide remains, an issue recognized at said Summit as a new dimension of economic and social divisions. In that sense, González Vidal explained that this and other related issues were addressed with concern by numerous Heads of State and Government at the G-77 and China Summit, held in Havana, Cuba, last September, and that Its central theme was: “Current development challenges: Role of Science, Technology and Innovation.”
In the Final Declaration of this Summit it was stated that the G77 and China promote: “close alignment between the World Summit on the Information Society process and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.” It was also agreed to “work towards a strong and concerted position of the G-77 and China to ensure that the General Review process of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS+20), the Global Digital Compact and the Future Summit contribute, among other things, to the achievement of sustainable development and to closing the digital divide between developed and developing countries.”
