Cuba celebrated the International Day of ICT Girls

30 April 2023 | For: Ministry of Communications of Cuba

This April 27 was celebrated in Cuba, for the 7th occasion, the International Day of Girls in ICT, with the motto "Digital skills for life". Once again hundreds of women from early ages to adults met to promote the possibility of directing their studies and professions in the field related to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), and thus there is greater participation and performance of girls, adolescents, young people and women in these spheres.

The Cuban government promotes equal access to Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). Since the beginning of the Revolution, the country's leadership has worked to guarantee the full development of women in society, proof of this is the active participation of women, youth and girls in all development programs of the Computerization process of the Cuban society, which are in tune with the 2030 Agenda and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, among which are: Achieve equality between genders and empower all women and girls, this SDG that includes among her goals: Improve the use of enabling technology, particularly information and communication technology, to promote women's empowerment.

It should be noted that as part of the government's strategy, inclusive policies and programs have been approved in order to ensure the rights of women and girls, such as the National Program for the Advancement of Women, based on the rigorous observance of the Cuban State on the international agreements and commitments that support the rights of women, and takes into account the challenges arising from the evaluations carried out on the Plan of Action of the Republic of Cuba for follow-up to the IV UN Conference on Women.

The Gender Committee was established in the Ministry of Communications, which has among its priorities to bring girls closer to Technologies, in order to reduce the gaps that are identified. Cuba has projections focused on continuing to increase connectivity, develop ICTs and reduce the digital divide, promoting the use of ICTs as a tool for the development of knowledge, the economy and the teaching-learning process. International Girls in ICT Day is an initiative endorsed by the Member States of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in Resolution 70 (Rev. Busan, 2014) of the Plenipotentiary Conference with the purpose of creating a global environment that empowers and encourages girls and young women to consider studying and pursuing a career in information and communication technology (ICT).
