Three Cuban projects nominated for the 2021 World Summit on the Information Society awards

Three projects from Cuba, as a member country of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), are nominated for the 2021 World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) awards. In category six, Enabling environment, the Greater Antilles is represented by the project Gender Equality in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) on wheels, presented by the Union of Informatics of Cuba (UIC) at its headquarters in Las Tunas. Faced with COVID-19, Cuba achieves its first innovation based on nanotechnology (+ Video) This initiative starts from the causes, characteristics and consequences of the digital gender gap in the country and offers a schedule of activities designed based on the digital empowerment of women and girls in hard-to-reach communities and population settlements, as a concrete action proposal to contribute to its reduction. Ailyn Febles Estrada, president of the young organization, highlighted to Granma that it is also part of the UIC's role to work on technological literacy to achieve a responsible and inclusive digital citizen, free from manifestations of gender violence, a joint effort with several institutions of civil society and the Government.

 

Also, in section 16: Media, the nominated project is CMHS Radio Caibarién. La Voz de la Villa Blanca, of the Cuban Institute of Radio and Television, which aims to inform and disseminate the material and immaterial culture, as well as the history and human values ​​of the municipality and which, in addition, was awarded in 2020 the certificate of Champion of the WSIS Awards. Similarly, in category 17: Ethical Dimensions of the Information Society, the project Construction of gender competes in the commercial television advertising discourse of Cubavisión Internacional, also of the UIC in its subsidiary in Villa Clara. This research characterizes the construction of the genre of the advertising and commercial discourse present in the exchange program of the television channel during 2019 from a qualitative perspective. Febles Estrada specified that two of the three nominated projects are from the UIC means a gift, precisely when the organization is close to its fifth anniversary. The systematic presence of Cuban projects among the WSIS award nominations and the recognition as winners of others, shows the progress in the country of the society's computerization program and the search for integrative and national solutions based on technologies.
